The pollen grains become sterile in the absence of tapetum as it provides nutrition as well as enzymes which are required for microsporogenesis and development of pollen.

Therefore, in absence of tapetum abnormal pollen development takes place that leads to male sterility in plants.

  • The tapetum is a layer of nutritive cells which are found inside an anther. It is located between the anther wall and sporogenous tissue.
  • The main function of tapetum is to provide nutrition and metabolites to the developing pollen grains. It also regulates meiosis and formation of pollen wall.
