Why do rulers in non-democratic countries need to hold elections?

Answer : Well, this is a great question but let me point it out, in most of the cases , it's just a fake election.
Explanation:
Rulers in non-democratic countries hold elections to show that they are also popular and have the consent of the ruled.
They basically do this to improve their image in eyes of the other countries.
Another reason is that they want to show others that the ruler and his government have come to that position by legal and constitutional provisions method.
But there's the catch , sometimes the election is just a show to the world. In Russia, over 100 Million people voted but still It ranks 124 on the democracy index and is marked as ' authoritarian regime'
