The south westerly winds arrive from the oceans and are full of moisture. they move around from Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea and thus causes rainfall in India.

Windward direction is the upward direction of the wind while leeward side in the downward direction of wind

Chennai receives most of its rain from the north east monsoons from Oct to Dec and thus have rain in these months
While other areas gets the south west monsoon rains from Arabian sea from June to Aug.

The winds blowing from south-west to north east direction from June to September which come from tropical seas and oceans.

Southwest monsoon winds blow in India under two branches which cause the rainfall in India named: Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

The windward side is the point of upward direction of wind, it implies the side towards wind is blowing whereas leeward side is downward direction of wind which is opposite to the side of which the wind is blowing.

Chennai is located on eastern coast, the Arabian Sea branch stated above reaches Chennai it gives less rain. Chennai receives more of its rain from North east monsoon in winters, the Arabian sea branch helps in the rainfall in Malabar coast and it receives rain in the months of June and July.
