stars appear twinkling because when a light ray travels from one medium to another it bends. This phenomenon is referred to as refraction. if it travels from a rare medium to a dense medium, it bends towards the normal and if it travels from denser medium to rare, it bends away from the normal. The speed through which it travels changes depending upon the medium and therefore this bending occurs and due to this bending stars appear to twinkle.........

Explanation:

Stars twinkle due to atmospheric refraction of starlight. As the stars are very far away, they behave as almost point sources of light. A son account of atmospheric refraction, the path of rays of light coming from the star goes on varying slightly, the apparent position of the star fluctuates and the amount of starlight entering the eye flickers. So, sometimes, the star appears brighter and at some other time, fainter. Thus, the stars twinkle.
