It happens so because it is physically easier for short and compact chromosomes to move through the cytoplasm than the very long and twisted interphase chromosomes..

✔️Chromosomes become visible, crossing-over occurs, the nucleolus disappears, the meiotic spindle forms, and the nuclear envelope disappears.
✔️During prophase I, they coil and become shorter and thicker and visible under the light microscope.
