Tabla players tightens the skin of tabla before playing so that he can match sound frequency of chatti (wooden drum which makes treble sound) to the Lehra playing along with it or song scale to which he would be playing along.
Furthermore, Tighter the skin, higher the pitch. Therefore, to produce a loud sound, Tabla players tighten the tablas before playing.
