why do things float or sink?

This happens because of density, the ratio of an objects mass to volume.

If an object has a higher density than the fluid it is in, the object will move to the bottom of the fluid.

If an object has a lower density than the fluid it is in, the object will move to the top of the fluid.

ANSWER:

Things that float on water are less dense than water, things that sink in water are more dense than water.

IF THE DENSITY OF LIQUID IS MORE THAN THE OBJECT THEN THE OBJECT WILL FLOAT AND IF OBJECT HAVE MORE DENSITY THEN THAT OF LIQUID THEN OBJECT WILL SINK.
