After the decline of Kushanas in the North and Satavahanas in the Deccan there was no Central political authority in the north for nearly century. Then the Guptas emerged as a strong power in the Ganga Valley in the 4th century AD. For the next 200 years the Gupta rulers brought peace and prosperity to the country. The glorious rule of the Guptas is known as classical period of Indian history .
