We feel suffocated in a crowded auditorium because, there is a huge amount of people. People breath in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide. When people present is more, then oxygen displaced is more, and carbon dioxide breathed out is more. So, if enough oxygen is not there, it becomes difficult to breathe and thus we suffocate.
