Why do we need to convert electric impulse into chemical signal in a neuron for onward transmission ?

The electrical impulse has to pass through the synapse or gap between two neurons. However it cannot be done. Hence a chemical reaction is set off in the nerve ending of the first neuron and is transmitted to the second neuron via the dendritic tip. This is required for neurocommunication.
