it is because stars (other than sun) are very, very far away from us and the energy generated from them is lost in surrounding via absorption in the surrounding medium. but we can see light emitted by stars unless there is some blocking medium in between such as dust clouds. for analogy, one can consider bonfire lit during winter season as one move away from bonfire he doesn't feel heat but one can see the light from bonfire.
