A map shows vast areas and its landmarks within a limited space. It is pretty difficult to draw a hospital or a fire station along with individual houses on a small piece of paper.
We use symbols in a map because they act as representational figures for the man-made or natural structures on earth. They also keep the map neat due to uncluttered drawings. They also make a map simple to read.
Thanks to symbols, we don't need to draw a post office or a park to represent them. We can draw a small box with P.O written in it to represent the post office and can use green colors for parks.
