Why do you think so many settlements were so close to the Atlantic Ocean?

Most immigration was from the East - Europe, etc. So it would be expected that the first settlements would be established on the east coast of America. Later on there was more movement towards the west, usually on the promise of free land for anyone willing to go west and settle there.
