Alkaloids are a group of naturally occurring chemical compounds that mostly contain basic nitrogen atoms. This group also includes some related compounds with neutral and even weakly acidic properties. Some synthetic compounds of similar structure are also termed http://alkaloids.In addition to carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, alkaloids may also contain oxygen, sulfur and, more rarely, other elements such as chlorine, bromine, and phosphorus.

Alkaloids are the secondary metabolites of plants. They are internal constitutes of plants so called as biomolecules.

Uses of alkaloids are based on their toxic effects on the body.

Their toxicity is seen by changes in body physiology when administered or consumed.

But some of these toxic effects are useful in-terms of health when used at right doses. Excess doses will be definitely poisonous and harmful to man.

Chemically they contain nitrogen in them and so are alkaline in nature. They are also less soluble in water. They can be found in different parts of the plant like leaves, stem, bark, roots etc.
