Why do you think that noble gases are placed in a separate group?

Not all elements show  similarity ...they show a bit different..so kept separately.

It is for the same reason that all elements are placed in different groups: they have similar properties due to their outer shell of electrons. Group 18 (noble gases) have a filled outer shell so they are not reactive. Group 17 (halogens) need one electron to complete their outer shell, so they are very reactive. These similar properties go on until Group 2 (alkaline earths) which have two electrons in their outer shells and are somewhat reactive, and Group 1 (alkalines) which have a single electron in their outer shell, and this electron is easily lost, so they are very reactive.
