Doctors dip thermometers in a liquid before using it to disinfect it from the  germs. There are some receptors under the tongue which sensor heat in the body.So we put a thermometer under the tongue.

The liquid is an alcohol based disinfectant. This liquid cleans the thermometer.

The thermometer is kept under the tongue, because, it gives the correct reading of inner body temperature.
