Sperms are produced in large numbers because of low survival chance. They are quite sensitive to environmental factors such as pH and heat. The sperms once in the female vaginal orifice, have to move all the way up to the Fallopian tube and only a few make it to that point. Therefore to increase the chances of a sperm reaching the ovum in the Fallopian tube to fertilize it, they must be produced and released in large numbers.
