Why does a compass needle placed near a wire get deflected when electric current is passes through it?

because an electric field is generated around the wire when current is passed through it

The compass needle deflects when an electric wire passes through it. This shows electromagnetism. Oersted has proven/ shown with his experiment. He placed a magnetic compass beliw a 24 gauge wire placed on a slit in which electric current passes through it.
