A ball has high momentum which is given by p = mv . The force acting on hands due to ball is F = change in momentum / change in time . The total change in momentum remains same. Hence a cricketer moves his hands backwards while catching a ball to increase the time in which ball slows down and hence it reduces the impulse of force of ball.
