a fielder pulls his/her hands with the ball to brace for the impact and have better control over the ball and its movements. if a fielder tried to catch the ball without moving with it, the ball might stay, but would probably fall out. if you tried to catch a moving ball without moving your mitt, it could pop out randomly without the extra support. i hope this helps.
