why does an athlete take a longer jump if he comes running from a distance then when is am student from the take off line

An athlete can take a longer jump as according to Newton's law of motion, a person tends to be in motion until stopped by an external force. Athlete is in motion and his speed is greater... when he takes off... he just changes his direction(elevates) from the ground... (you can refer to projectile motion, where u is the speed just before the take off from the ground)... and he experience an external force after he falls to the ground... where momentum works!!!

This is because when the athlete is running it is in state of motion so when he take the long jump due to inertia of motion it retains the same state of motion and thus it becomes easier to him to take a long jump
