Some objectsstart out with a density of less than water (1 gram per cubic centimeter), so they float naturally.

An object can float or sink on the surface of water for two reasons;
1) If the density of the object is less than water then it will normally float on the surface of the water.
2) If the object is heavier than the water then we have to increase the surface area of that object with the less amount of mass possible.
(For this reason iron slab sinks in the water but an iron made ship can easily float on the water because the surface area of the ship is greater than it's mass).
