Why does buildings have wide foundations?

The foundation will be able to balance the weight of the building. Thrust is the force acting perpendicular on the surface. Buildings are massive structures which exerts tremendous pressure on the ground and likely to sink. To avoid sinking their foundations are made wide, so that pressure on the ground decreases.
