Gaston insists on taking the picture as a souvenir from Mrs Al Smith because Juliette, the real owner of the villa had mentioned it to Gaston that she would not sell the picture if she ever sold it to anyone. The picture was signed by Corot; and she was a great admirer of his works. So Gaston wanted to honour her wish by letting her keep the picture.
