Why does the cinducton refer to valli as madam?

conductor refer Valli as madam because she says him that she is not a child and she pays equal money for ticket as other one pays .so the conductor jockingly refer her as a madam.

The conductor was fond of joking. He called her name madam to tease her. Valli was behaving like a grown-up and confident lady. She did not need anybody helps. She was annoyed when the old man called her a child. Moreover she had paid her fare herself and was traveling all alone.
