the poet made reference to the albatross because in the previous poem 'rime of the ancient mariner' after killing the albatross all the people had to regret, same in the case of the snake, after hitting the snake with the stone, the man could do nothing but regret!

The reference of albatross by DH Lawrence in poem snake is an allusion to the poem The Rime of Ancient Mariner where the mariner kills albatross and suffer due to his act here in poem snake, poet compares mariner's act to that of his act of throwing log at the creeping snake.
the poet feels the same feeling of pettiness like the mariner for his act that was against the nature.
