Why dot products always gives a scalar quantity

The dots product are taken to be scalar because we have some physical quantities which have only magnitude but there is no direction and the scalar product of two vectors gives the magnitude only but no direction hence the magnitude of dot products are scalar and it gives us only magnitude but no direction example - work , potential energy , kinectic energy. etc.
