Why even number carbon chain has more melting point as compare to odd carbon chain

This is because methyl groups at the ends of chains can avoid methyl groups of another chain only by increasing distance between their chains. Therefore, alkanes with odd number of carbon atoms havelower melting point than those with an even number of carbon atoms.
