Friction is proportional to no. of irregularities as more their will be irregularities in the surface the more will be the opposition to the flow of something and eventually the speed of that this will slow down. Let's take the example of roads. On a smooth plastered and cemented road their will be reduced friction for a truck while if the road is little irregular the friction will increase for the truck. Thus more the surface is irregular more will be the friction. Thus friction is proportional to no. of irregularities...
Hope this helps..

Friction is proportional to number of irregularities. the rough surfaces have more irregularities in the form of grooves and ridges.thus their interlocking increases. due to this increased interlocking, the friction is more.

the smooth surfaces have less irregularities. thus, their interlocking will comparitively be less.

that is why friction is proportional to the number of irregularities.
