why had the two person come to Belmont ? why do they go back without attaining their purpose ?

(1) Bassanio and Gratiano came to Belmont because they were trying their luck in choosing the caskets

Bassanio was trying to win Portia , the beautiful rich heiress of Belmont.

(2) Bassanio had to go back when he received a letter from his dear friend Antonio.

The letter was about the great loss of Antonio . Antonio had lost all his ships in the shipwreck.

Hence Bassanio wanted to go back to Venice for saving Antonio from the clutches of Shylock.
