The poet's mother has been compared to the ‘late winter's moon' because winter , like old age is a time of inactivity. Old age is the last phase of human life just as winter is the last month of the Year. And in old age a man grows pale like death just as the moon in late winter looks pale white.

The poet has used a smile which is natural and appropriate. Her mother's face looked pale, faded shrunk like a dead body. Similarly the late winter moon looks hazy, lacks brightness as well as strength.

          So she feels that the ''wan, pale, ashen'' look on her mother's face is like the winter moon.
