Helmuth's father committed suicide as he was a Nazi and a supporter of Adolf Hitler. Because of Hitler's determination to make Germany into a mighty power and conquering all of Europe he did many crimes against humanity. But Nazism was not one or two isolated acts and in May 1945 when Germany surrendered to the Allies, anticipating what was coming Hitler and his supporters or the Nazis committed suicide.
It was sure that they had to die no matter what as at the end of the war, an International Military Tribunal was set-up in Nuremberg to prosecute Nazi war criminals (Nazis) for Crimes Against Humanity, Crimes Against Peace and for War Crimes. So Helmuth's father thought that to commit suicide is better than being prosecute by the IMT.
