Ammonia is a gas that is highly soluble in water. Thus during lab preparation of ammonia, excess amount of calcium hydroxide is used as drying agent. The main purpose of this step is that, as soon as calcium hydroxide is passed over ammonia gas, it gets itself attached to the gas and dries it.
