It isn't purely escapist... some types of humor require wit and brilliance, but humor is there primarily for enjoyment and fun rather than for taking things solemnly and seriously. Wisdom on the other hand is there so that we know what to do with our intelligence. So that we can judge correctly when it is good to say what we think, or crack a joke, or take something seriously.
