Why if a battery is short-circuited with a thick wire more heat is produced as compared to thin wire of same length

Because the resistance depends on the thickness of the wire

Thick wire's carries more current compared to thin wire.
It all depends on resistivity is inversely proportional to area of the conductor cross section.
Warning: Thin or thick wire if it is short circuited theoretically resistance becomes zero and current becomes infinity. The wire will melt or catches fire and even batter gets heated up and can leak or explode. You should never short circuit a battery.
