why is air blown around the coal or wood to burn it?

In olden times when we used to cook the food on chulha , we used to light the papers , dry grass or some pieces of wood. It would not catch the fire so we used to blow the air from a pipe so that it could catch fire instantly.

coal and wood are carbon fuels when they start to hheat they release carbon dioxide/ monoxide that forms a blanket or aura aroung the fuel.. oxygen is required to burn the fuel when we blow air oxygen enters the aura and the fuel starts to burn
