Why is buoyant force called upthrust

Because force in other words is called thrust and the buoyant force is the upward force exerted by water. That is it is called upthrust.

When an object is immersed , it experiences an upward force by the liquid.
This upward force is known as buoyant force.
As the force applied by liquid is towards up , it is also called upthrust [ thrust = force ]
