Why is Ceres considered a planet and not an asteroid?

Ceres is not considered as a planet but it is considered as a drawf planet because its sizes about 2993 kilometres and no asteroid observed till date is not so big . And if Ceres crashes with any other planet then it may cause huge destruction.
