the concentration of surfactants in the bulk at which micellesstart forming. The word bulk isimportant because surfactants partition between the bulk and interface and CMC is independent of interface and is therefore a characteristic of the surfactant molecule

The critical micelle concentration are important because these include the amphiphile chain length, dissolved salts, the structure of the head group, temperature, the structure of the alkyl chain and polar additives. The effects of chain length, salts and alcohol on the critical micelle concentration have been widely studied .
