Derry was withdrawn and defiant because he did not want anyone to meet him and pass judgements and he was specially sensitive to people talking about his face. His face had an acid burn on one side, because of which he had an inferiority complex and was usually anxious and fearful about the reactions people might give to the ugly looking burnt part of his face, that led him to seclusion and avoiding interactions to a large extent.
