Ruhr is actually a place in Germany which is also the main centre for Germany's coal, iron and steel production.
Similarly, Durgapur in India had large public sector industries such as Steel plants, Glass factories and Machinery Factories. Also thermal power plants and fertilier factories at the end of the 1960s, which attracted more factories and industries to Durgapur. And Durgapur is now the main centre to West Bengal similar to that of the city of Ruhr in Germany.
Thus, Durgapur is called the Ruhr of India.
