heya... evaporation is known as a surface phenomenon because it takes place only on the surface of the liquid whereas boiling takes place throughout the liquid...
Evaporation takes place at surface and below the boiling point. The surface atoms or molecules gains energy from surroundings and overcome the attractions of other molecules & get to vapourise
EX: If you keep water under sunlight as the temperature increases the water molecules gets energy to breakdown the attractive forces and gets converted into vapour.

Evaporation is called as evaporation phenomenon because as the surface area so the rate of evaporation.....
EXAMPLE:
When a wet cloth is put to dry off; if we put it by spreading / unfolding, the cloth drys up / evaporation of water particles present in cloth takes place faster.... And if we put same peice of wet cloth by folding, it will take a longer period of time to dry up....
So, we can say that evaporation is a surface phenomenon...
