Why is friction called a necessary evil?

Without friction we cannot set out the bodies in motion or stop the moving bodies. Thus friction is absolutely necessary for carrying day to day activities. On the other hand, it also wastes the time and energy, brings about wear and tear and slows down the motion.....

The resistance faced in rubbing surface of one object on other is called as friction.

It causes losses in many processes but still it is called as necessary evil. The reason for this is that many processes cannot be done without it.

For example, when we walk on the road it is just because of the friction between our shoes and ground that we move forward. Other example include lifting objects and writing.
