Gaston was not interested in buying the villa in the beginning because he knew that Jeanne wanted to buy it for her parents. Also, he was irritated by the fact that Jeanne's parents would bring her sister's children with them to live in the villa. He was not ready to pay the excessive price to buy the villa, when he wouldn't be getting to live in it.
