It is easier to life a stone in water than in air because water exerts a force called uptrust or buoyancy .
hope my answer helped you

reenanagpal73pc4c6b: doesnt air have upthrust?
Anupamasrimaa: air have but less in magnitude than in water
reenanagpal73pc4c6b: but if air has even a little doesnt it help
Anupamasrimaa: it helps but air also experience another force from wind....
reenanagpal73pc4c6b: ok thanku

Because water exerts a buoyant force on stone.

For further explanation see the Archimedes Law.

reenanagpal73pc4c6b: we did not learn the archimedes law in 8th
saurabhyadavanpcfojf: Archimedes' principle states that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the center of mass of the displaced fluid.
