Why is it necessary to clean the magnesium strip before reacting it with hydrochloric acid?
Answers
Answer:
Reaction of magnesium with hydrochloric acid can be represented by the following equation:
Mg+ 2HCl => MgCl2 + H2
Now, this reaction occurs when we put a pure magnesium strip in hydrochloric acid .
Usually, when a magnesium strip is kept in contact with air, some of it reacts with water vapour in air to form magnesium hydroxides which get deposited on the strip.
Magnesium hydroxides prevent reaction of magnesium with HCl by preventing the meeting of the reactants.
Hence, a magnesium strip should be cleaned to remove the hydroxides. This helps in performing the proper reaction.
It is necessary to clean Magnesium ribbon before burning in air so that the layer of Magnesium oxide(which is formed due to the reaction of Magnesium and air) is removed to get the desired results.
