Jim Crow legislation was a combination of state and provincial ordinances that authorized racial discrimination. The Whites Southern practiced various methods to keep African Americans under their control. During this time women also faced challenges not because of segregation but also because of the discrimination due to her gender. For instance, Emma Rochelle Wheeler faced enormous challenges of being the first woman of color in the field of medical not only being of color but being a woman as well.
