Litmus soluble in water is a mixture of various pigments which thallophyte is extracted from a plant called 'lichen group. It is often used as a pointer. When litmus solution is neither acidic nor basic, then it is purple in color. Colorful petals of many natural substances such as red cabbage, turmeric, hydrangea, petunia and geranium indicate the presence of acids and bases in a solution. These are called acid-base indicators or sometimes waffle indicators. When passing co2 in blue litmus, it turns red.
