Why is lime water used to test for carbon dioxide in laboratory and what will happen if excess is passed into lime water?

lime water, a good indicator of carbon dioxide, turns into a milky solution of calcium carbonate when carbon dioxide is passed through it ...so lime water used to test for carbon dioxide in laboratory......
