The line of sight (LOS) mode is limited to frequencies above 40MHz, because at these frequencies antennas are relatively smaller and can be placed at heights of many wavelengths above the ground Because of LOS mode direct waves get blocked by the curvature of earth. For receiving signals beyond horizon, the receiving antenna must be very high to intercept the LOS wave.
